AYF 2018-19 ~ Who are our Participants?

Considering further improvements to our already impressive American nails in Basel.

The 2018-19 AYFers have been in Freiburg for almost three months now. A busy and lively orientation month with field trips to the Schauinsland, Alsace, and Basel and half the Wintersemester are behind us. As they wrap up their intensive language courses, AYFers are looking forward to the Holiday Break and a little breather before the intense end of the semester and writing German-style seminar papers.

The 2018-19 AYF group has smoothly settled in Freiburg. Students are deeply engaged in immersing themselves in German culture and language. This year’s cohort includes students pursuing bachelor degrees at Michigan State University (5), University of Iowa (4), University of Michigan (13), the University of Wisconsin-Madison (7), and Purdue University (1). These students study a variety of subjects within the Humanities, the Social and Behavioral Sciences, and the Natural Sciences. Interest in political science, international studies, and international relations is especially pronounced.

Once again, AYF participants are fortunate to have received a variety of scholarships. 4 students received a Baden-Württemberg stipend, 3 students garnered a prestigious Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) scholarship and a large number of students were awarded funds from the Max Kade foundation.

AYF participants Samantha Brzezinski and Neil Janes (UW-Madison) are recipients of the Freiburg-Madison Scholarship 2018-19. They are looking forward to joining the new Freiburg Mayor Martin Horn at the New Year’s Reception in the Konzerthaus in January.
